Ok, first things first. I'm a big fan of neutral polish, but it's hard to make a picture of grey polish look pretty and interesting! After many failed attempts at a pretty bottle shot, I ended up with this dud below. Bleh. Grey and white don't exactly offer up an exciting color scheme, now do they? (Artsy people, I'm sure you would have come up with something spectacular, but unfortunately, I'm an accountant and my artsy skills only go so far).
Now that we've addressed my inability to transform the color grey into something bright and sunny...let's get back to the fact that I love neutral polishes! I think a lot of people find neutrals boring and bleh, but I ADORE THEM! Call me simple, call me plain, but "simple and neutral" has a place in my heart. So I was very intrigued by the grey shades in L'Oreal's Dark Sides of Grey collection.
After holding out on purchasing the infamous "Masked Affair", I finally purchased it over the weekend after describing to the hubby that this was "a collector's item" and I really should own it. (Some back story for family, friends, and the non-polish obsessed...L'Oreal came out with a nail polish collection based on the 50 Shades of Grey movie that is coming out this month, and the polish "Masked Affair" has been coveted as the holy grail, for lack of a better term. Everyone has pretty much geeked out over this polish, so of course, I began to geek out, too!)
I saw review after review of this polish, and held out because, honestly, I wasn't sure if I'd like a holographic polish. Yep, this is my first one! Finally, I read one last review of this polish over at Manna's Manis, and decided to bite the bullet! I couldn't pass this polish up if everyone was raving about it, right?

Well...the verdict? I actually really love it! It has a pretty holographic rainbow effect. It's not "in your face", but instead very soft and still looks like a neutral from afar. It's a sneaky little polish...you think it's just grey then WHAM! This baby has some sparkle and shimmer! I'm loving it! Honestly, I didn't think I'd be as impressed with it as I am. It has a nice formula, too - I used two coats here. I did get a weird bald spot on two of my nails, so I added a third coat on those to even things out.
Next up...Aux Chandelles! This is the lightest grey in the collection, and to some, the least exciting. But to me, this one sure is purrrrrdy. It has a wax effect finish to it, which I love! It doesn't dry super glossy, and it's not a matte. It really does look like wax on the nails. I saw some negative reviews surrounding the application of this polish, but I didn't really find it that difficult to work with. Sure, the first coat was a little streaky, but I think that happens with all light polishes, so I've come to expect it. Not a deal breaker for me, though. I just applied it a little bit thicker, and thought two coats did the trick. The polish leveled and evened itself out on my nails, and I was really happy with the finished look.
I tried adding a top coast to see how it changed the finish, and you definitely lose the wax effect, but it's still pretty! I think I'll wear it without a top coat, though, so I don' t lose the waxy finish.
Now, just so your eyes remember what colors look like, here's a pretty yellow flower.
Have you tried Masked Affair or Aux Chandelles? What did you think? Are you a neutral polish person, like me?
