When I first discovered my love for nail polish, I didn't realize all of the extra "stuff" that goes into the perfect manicure. There's so much more to a manicure than just the polish. Because of this, I thought it might be helpful to share some of these "extra" products in a new series that I'm calling Nail Care 101. Each post in this series will feature a nail care product that I love and one that I use in my nail care routine. It can be overwhelming to know which products to buy, so hopefully by sharing some of the ones I love, I can help you navigate through the nail care world. And since nail care products can be pricey, consider this a little preview before you go out and spend your hard earned money. :)
As the title suggests, the first product that I have for you is Essie's Apricot Cuticle Oil. If you're not using a cuticle oil, I highly recommend getting one, especially if you use acetone nail polish remover. While acetone works wonders removing nail polish (especially those pesky glitters), it can severally dry out your cuticles and the skin around your nails. My skin always turns white and ashy after I use acetone (totally not cute!), but the oil helps re-hydrate my cuticles and keeps them soft and supple. I use this stuff after every single manicure, and in between manicures as well!
To apply the cuticle oil, just use the brush and paint over your cuticles. It's ok if the oil gets onto your nails (assuming they are dry) - it's not going to hurt anything. You'll want to let the oil soak in for a minute or two, then rub it into your cuticles and the skin around your nails. After rubbing it in, it will absorb pretty quickly - you aren't left with a sticky, oily mess, which is great! Another perk about this product - you're treated to a pleasant apricot scent. This stuff smells awesome!
If you have dry cuticles, you'll notice a difference even after just a few days of use. Before I got serious about nail polish, I never used cuticle oil. The skin around my nails was always so dry, and I'd pick at it. Terrible habit, I know! Once I began using this on a routine basis, I noticed that I had far less hang nails - thank goodness! Even if you don't paint your nails all of the time, this type of product is still a nice one to have.
Essie products are available at most drugstores, mass retailers (like Target), and beauty stores (like Ulta). The apricot cuticle oil generally sells for $8.50 and it's worth every penny! If you are looking for it at the store, it comes packaged in the white box below.
